Current Impact of AI Search Results on Organic Website Traffic

Search engines have always been the front door to online visibility. But in the last two years, and more specifically the last few months, that door has been reshaped. AI-driven search results like Google’s AI Overviews, Bing’s Copilot, and tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT are changing how people find information. For many small businesses, this change has meant fewer clicks, even when their rankings remain strong.

The concern is understandable: less traffic often feels like less opportunity and less revenue. But the truth is more nuanced. While AI search has taken clicks, it hasn’t necessarily taken revenue. It has taken away that first touch point, those “branding” style clicks.

The Shift from Traditional Search to AI Search

AI search works by compiling information from multiple sources and presenting it directly to the user, often without requiring a visit to any single website. This differs from the classic ten listings with links to websites, where clicks to websites were crucial for finding answers.

Example:

  • Traditional Search: Searching “best coffee shops in Chicago” shows a list of sites to click.
  • AI Search: The same query may display an answer summarizing the top coffee shops, opening hours, and even customer reviews, all without the need to click through.

For quick, factual, or list-style queries, this means the searcher gets their answer instantly, and your site might never see that click. This also means a substancial hit to your branding.

The Decline in Organic Clicks

Recent studies show that AI-generated answers can reduce click-through rates for informational queries byalmost 100%. The effect is most noticeable for:

  • “how-to”, “what is” content
  • FAQ-style articles

A recent study by Danial Drabo, Founder of Peec AI, & Marius, Employee of Peec AI, highlights the accelerating shift toward Zero Click Search, where users get their answers directly on the search page or through AI tools, without clicking through to websites. The data shows a dramatic rise in answer delivery within the search interface itself:

  • Google: 60% of queries now result in no clicks to external websites.
  • Google with AIO: Integration with AI Overviews raises zero-click rates to 70%.
  • Google AI Mode: Delivers answers directly 95% of the time.
  • ChatGPT: Reaches a staggering 99% zero-click rate, meaning nearly all queries are answered without leaving the platform.

This shift underscores the growing challenge for brands relying on organic search traffic. As search evolves from “blue links” to “direct conversations,” capturing user attention within these AI-driven environments becomes critical for brand visibility and lead generation.

Since I started writing this article, ChatGPT 5 was released. And we are starting to see a very small shift. Overviews siting sources have been pushed down by a business list (similar to search engine lists.) A search for “best plumbers Jefferson Park” used to look like this.

Screenshot of an AI Chatgpt search result

The grey oval would be a list of sited sources, that would like to those pages. However, these sources, and information is taken from variety of websites, business and brands. The Rocket Plumbing sources, in order are:

  1. Rocket Plumbing
  2. Kuhn Plumbing
  3. ABV Plumbing
  4. J Blanton Plumbing
  5. J Blanton Plumbing
  6. Baethke Plumbing
  7. Jefferson Park Plumbing
  8. Yelp
  9. Yelp
  10. Baethke Plumbing

While Rocket Plumbing is listed as #1, and gets the first sited source link, 9 others are included in that list, and 3 of the sources are sited twice (J Blanton, Batethke & Yelp).

Since the release of ChatGPT 5 the same search “best plumbers Jefferson Park” now looks like:

As you can see this looks much similar to what you would see in search engines like Google & Bing.

Why Lower Traffic Doesn’t Always Mean Lower Revenue

It’s easy to see a 20% drop in traffic and assume sales will fall the same way. But AI search often trims the “just curious” visitors while leaving your “ready to buy” audience intact.

Example:
A small eCommerce store selling camping gear sees fewer clicks from general searches like “how to pitch a tent.” However, product-specific searches like “buy ultralight 2-person tent” still bring visitors who convert. Revenue stays steady, even with fewer total visits.

This shift means it’s time to track revenue per visitor and conversion rates more closely, rather than focusing only on raw traffic numbers.

Studies from industry leaders are quoting anywhere from 30% – 60% loss in clicks due to AI search results; I am seeing an average of 15% – 30% with my clients.

Adapting Your SEO & Marketing Strategy for AI Search

One of the biggest hidden impacts of AI search is the loss of branding traffic. In the past, low-quality, informational searches, things like “how to fix a dripping faucet” or “what’s the best time to visit Chicago” still brought users to your website. Even if those visitors weren’t ready to buy, they saw your brand, explored your site, and began to recognize your name. Over time, this recognition built familiarity and trust, paving the way for a potential conversion down the road. When AI answers these questions directly in search results, that early brand touchpoint disappears. You may not see an immediate revenue drop, but you lose those first touchpoint moments that organic search once provided.

Small businesses can position themselves to thrive in this new search landscape by:

  • Optimizing for AI inclusion: Create authoritative, clear, and trustworthy content so AI tools cite your site.
  • Targeting purchase-intent queries: Focus on keywords where the user is likely to take action, not just gather facts.
  • Brand visibility in answers: Make sure your brand name is associated with expertise so even no-click searches leave an impression and build brand recognition.
  • Diversifying traffic sources: Use email marketing, PPC campaigns, and social channels to keep leads coming in.

The New Customer Journey in an AI Search Era

The awareness stage is where AI search has the most significant impact, it answers quick questions instantly. To earn the click, businesses need to create content that goes deeper than the AI summary can provide.

This means:

  • Adding unique insights, visuals, or tools AI can’t replicate
  • Offering downloadable resources or calculators that require site visits
  • Telling stories that build emotional connection, not just provide facts

Once you get users to your site, you need to keep them. This greatly increases the importance of the user journey on your website. Website marketing, UX & UI design just became more important. Utilizing analytic tools like Google Analytics or a CRM ingretion are now imperative.
